Full Text: (Q7) Investing in Medford's Historical Resources

Medford is one of the oldest cities in the United States. Today citizens perform the tasks of promoting historical tourism and preserving historical properties, buildings and artifacts, but with no money or central coordination. How can the city protect and invest in its historic resources? If you were elected, would you support a bond initiative for the preservation of Medford's historic properties and artifacts? Please elaborate.

Arena: (Q7) Investing in Medford's Historical Resources

On its face, a bond initiative appears to be a painless vehicle for the funding of worthwhile projects, and surely the promotion and protection of Medford's proud history and properties are a worthwhile project. I would work with our state delegation to promote a bond initiative, provided the bottom line does not result it an increased financial burden upon our city's taxpayers.

Burke: (Q7) Investing in Medford's Historical Resources

The City Council has authorized the funding of millions of dollars for the Brooks Estate to date via our Community Block Grant Allotment. These are funds that could have been used for other purposes. However, the council has been a strong advocate for this historic preservation project that is controlled by the Medford- Brooks Estate Land Trust. This facility could offer the function space that Medford so desperately needs. Once a comprehensive Master Plan to complete this process is submitted by the Trust, which will include capital costs and a business plan, we will be better able to gage the funding opportunities available.

It is also important to incorporate Medford's history in our public school education plan. If we demonstrate the importance of our history to our children, they will in turn feel and connection and an interest in preserving it further.

Camuso: (Q7) Investing in Medford's Historical Resources

Medford has many historical assets. We should convene all the stakeholders together with the Historical Commission to design a plan that could generate new resources and energy for the optimum development of our historical assets. If such a plan emerged, I would support a bond issue that would promote tourism and preservation. We are well situated to the Boston area and the right strategy and investment could yield significant benefit.

Chamberlain: (Q7) Investing in Medford's Historical Resources

I believe the city should consider forming an historical commission, and appoint knowledgeable citizens of Medford who would make recommendations for preservation projects and ideas that would showcase Medford’s history. Particularly, Medford’s history of shipbuilding, and how this fact of history can be promoted and preserved and showcased.

Dello Russo: (Q7) Investing in Medford's Historical Resources

Medford’s unique position in our Nation’s history needs to be revered. Our historic treasure need to be protected and preserved. The City’s financial resources are not strong. Our debt is growing. Our needs are many. What would the original occupants of the Royal House do faced with this reality? What would the colonial Medford citizen do?  The zeal demonstrated by Medford’s early inhabitants for building our nation still is a source of inspiration. That citizen participation is what we need to hold onto our historic treasures. If those who are exercising leadership in these historic venues need money for preservation or to centralize their efforts, I would certainly consider their requests and assist them in achieving their goals.

Lungo: (Q7) Investing in Medford's Historical Resources

We are lucky to have a number of historical properties in the City of Medford and even luckier to have such dedicated people to look after them and help them prosper. Our historical districts, as well as the Royal House, the Peter Tufts House, the Brooks Estates, the Medford Pipe bridge Middlesex Fells Reservation, and the Salem street burial ground are just a part of this city's history.

The city can protect and invest in its historic resources by continuing to support the different organizations and the people who make them thrive day in and day out. We also need to make sure these resources are well maintained, which means helping out with the funding, as we have done in the past. The City Council on a number of occasions has appropriated money to help these resources, for example, the roof at the Brooks Estates. I will continue to be a supporter of Medford's historical resources and will take each bond initiative as it comes. I like to decide on issues, especially when it deals with going out to bond, when all the information is on the table and all of my questions have been answered.

Maiocco: (Q7) Investing in Medford's Historical Resources

I have supported the use of federal funds for historic preservation and will continue to do so. Before committing to long-term borrowing of money for such preservation, I would need specifics as to the financial impact on the taxpayers.

Marks: (Q7) Investing in Medford's Historical Resources

There's no worry that Medford, inspiration of Jingle Bells, and historical hub for shipbuilding, rum distilling, and brick manufacture, will ever be lost in the history of this country. It's kept alive through entities like the Brooks Estate land trust as well as the Royall House. To keep this alive, I would absolutely support a bond initiative! I believe the preservation of our historic properties and artifacts is important to t he character of the city.

However, we can't ignore current history. By that I mean that we must look to our present buildings as living history, and as such, preserve them. For example, while all of our schools serving K through 8 are state of the art, Medford High School is crumbling. Our eighth graders are going to enter a school that has had only minor improvement in years, like computer centers, labs, etc. Although we have placed $2.5 million into repair of the high school, we have to keep up on preventive maintenance - whether it is the gym one year, or the cafeteria another. As a City Councillor, I would invite you to join me in following very closely the activities of our school committee, and to ask them the same tough questions I do. This is no time for back-slapping or glad-handing. This is the time for accountability. I invite Medford residents to show up at meetings and go through budget items line by line to see the answers given to those tough questions.

Penta: (Q7) Investing in Medford's Historical Resources

As a member of the Medford Historical Society, I am presently preparing to have for community knowledge a Medford History day some time next year that will incorporate all the historical places and artifacts of all locations for community review. Before reviewing the bond portion of the question, I believe a complete review of the historical locations and who has control and authority over them needs to determined.
